By Caroline Clemmons

Available in E-book,Print, and  Kindle Unlimited

A woman running for her life…

A man determined to save her…

A terrible scheme to trap her...

Samantha Hayes didn’t intend to eavesdrop. She was merely getting a breath of fresh air when she heard her fiancé reveal his plot to end her life soon after they wed. He needed her fortune, but he had no intention of being bound to a woman who limped. She had only agreed to marry him due to her uncle’s pleading. Now she knew the truth and she vowed she would disappear.

Pinkerton Agent Kent Butler has been hired by Samantha’s aunt to find her. He follows her to Council Bluffs, where she boards the Union Pacific heading west. He sends a wire to the person who hired him, and then buys his ticket to join Samantha. Kent counts himself lucky when the conductor suggests Kent sit next to Samantha. Kent hadn’t counted on the two of them falling in love almost instantly. As the train chugs toward North Platte, Kent discovers the woman who hired him had deceived him. He has no intention of taking Samantha back to her aunt.

When her ex-fiancé shows up, she’s terrified. Will her plan to save herself work? What will happen when she learns Kent’s secret?

 Excerpt :

The next day after they’d stopped for breakfast, she said, “I’m very appreciative of the kind way you’ve escorted me on and off the train. You’re being quite chivalrous.”

He gave a slight bow. “My white horse wasn’t allowed in the passenger cars, so I must do the best I can on my own.”

Kent had helped her numerous times, but never made her feel clumsy or awkward. That was a surprise. Although she took her limp for granted and didn’t feel it diminished her as a person, most people didn’t act as though they shared her opinion. Years of listening to her aunt belittle her had left its mark.

She sat and peered out the window. She didn’t realize it until after she’d let out a big sigh.

“Sharing can lighten the load. I hoped you’d confide in me. You can ask Henry. He’ll tell you I’m trustworthy.”

She laid a hand on his arm. “That’s not why I hesitate. You see, I have one of those problems for which there is no answer, so there’s no reason to burden someone else.” Realizing what she’d done, she moved her hand back to her lap.

“Why don’t you try me? We have lots of time and not much else to do. I have strong shoulders to share your load and I won’t judge you.”

She sensed all the starch going out of her body and slumped against the seat. “All right, but it’s a long story.”
